Break/Goodbye

It is finally summer break part II. I'm so happy to not be in classes. It is nice to just be able to relax, clean, finally set up my room, sit down and watch tv, even though there is absolutely nothing on. Even though the terms can be intense, it was fun at times, and I learned a lot. I feel a little more prepared to deal with senior collection when it rolls around. Right now though, I refuse to think about anything sewing related. I want to completely unwind, catch up on sleep, and act like a bum for a week.
Well, for those who have read this and enjoyed it, it has a been a blast being your DWC for the summer. I wish you guys all the best here at Drexel or wherever you have chosen to go to. Enjoy college, it goes by fast. (I know it sounds like i'm 50, but it's true.)

Finals

This is the worst finals week I have had yet. This whole week has just flown by and I feel like I don't have enough time to do anything. At least I have one project out of the way, although I'm not exactly sure how well I did. I will just be glad when its Friday and I can watch tv without feeling like I should be doing something. That will be awesome and I have it all planned out. After my portfolio crtique, I'm going to 7-11 and grabbing some Mint Chip Haagen Dazs ice cream, going home, sitting on the couch and watching tv all day long. I'll pretty much have the house to myself because two of my roommates will be going home, and the other will probably go out somewhere. It will be me and my old friend the television.

Did I already mention how excited I am, because I'm excited.

Last Week

So this is the last week of classes and I'm really starting to feel the pressure. I have a lot to do before finals week rolls around. Before this week, I was fine. I was really calm, and I figured I had enough time before the end of the term to do everything I need. However, now I fear that I may have been mistaken. I still have a ton to do and I don't know if I made enough time for myself to finish everything. I just can't wait for 11 on Sept 7th, because after that, I will be able to breathe, relax, watch tv, hang out with my friends, basically become a normal person again. However, the end of this term means the beginning of senior year, which I don't know if I'm ready for. And if I think this term is bad, I don't know what I will do once senior collection comes along. Hopefully by that time, I will be much more organized and collected. I will have a schedule that I will follow, I won't be working, so I will have more time, and I will know what I am doing a bit more than I do now. I am optimistic about the future, while at the same time being scared out of my mind. I guess that's a normal reaction for most seniors about to go into the real world. Oh well, let me just get past this week and I will think about that some other time.

Right now, my goal is 11 in the morning on Sept 7th.

Senior Year

So this past week, I scheduled my classes for the fall. I can't believe it is senior year already. These past three years have just flown by, although sometimes it seems like it just inched by. So this fall I'm taking Fashion Design IV (Eveningwear, exciting!), CAD Patternmaking, Portfolio Review, Intro to Women's Studies ( I need humanities credits), an online math class, and Ballroom Dancing. It will be a full term, but hopefully it won't be too hard. I'm really looking forward to Ballroom Dancing. I've been wanting to take it since freshman year, and I never found the time. Unfortunately, my last year will be my hardest year, what with making my fashion show collection. However, I hope I can take the time to enjoy things while I can. Once I graduate, I will be a real person. I won't be able to come home for breaks. I'll need to find a real job, something to start off my career. I will have to start paying off loans. Ick. I love being a student. You can use the excuse of being a poor college student to get out of paying for things, buying people things, just generally being lazy. I'm going to miss that. But I am looking forward to working and making money.

Anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself. I still have a whole year to get through. Yay for senior year.

Week 8

I can't believe it's already week 8. This summer has completely flown by. Although it wasn't nearly as fun as last summer, since I have so much work to do, it wasn't too bad. Once my roommate takes her MCAT, things may pick up a little. She has a lot of "I'm done with my MCAT" celebrating to do, so she has a lot of plans. We'll see how much of that I can participate in. I know there is one thing that I have to do, go to Dorney Park, which is a water park in the area. I haven't been able to go to the shore yet, and I don't forsee a time that I will be able to go, so I decided that I'm going to get some water and sun somehow. I still want to go to the beach, but that may have to wait until I go home for break.

I'm a little scared that the term is almost over. I have so much work to do. I have six garments to make for sportswear, two portfolios for Fashion Presentation Drawing, and prepare for my exam in Finance. I think I will be able to handle most of the work, but I may have a couple of burnouts before the term is over. We shall see. Hopefully, I will be able to organize myself and get things done.

Good Friends

So, this weekend has made me realize what good friends I have made during my time here at Drexel. Friday night, my roommate Regina and I hung out with some of our friends from Campus Crusade for Christ. A couple of them made dinner, adn we just ssat around talking for like 3 hours. If I didn't have a ton of work to do, we probably would have stayed even longer. Then on Sunday, I hung out with a graduate student from Drexel, Beth, that goes to my church. We just sat around and talked all day long. I didn't even get any work done because I was just having too good a time.
My roommates are awesome as well. To think that we were put together randomly, and we have gotten along so well over these 3 years. I can't imagine what life here would have been like without them. Even our friends that we meet seperately get along once they meet. For example, one of my friends, Jess, that I met through another friend was looking for a place to live after sophomore year. We toyed around with the idea of 7 of us living in a house together (me, my three roommates, Jess, and two of Regina's friends) but that didn't end up working out. So, me and my three roommates ended up finding a house, and Jess and Regina's friends found a house together. And now they are really good friends! A lot of random circumstances leading to great friendships. Even during orientation, I met some people that I am still friends with to this day. Drexel is just full of such cool people.

Moving

I moved this weekend. It was exhausting, sweaty, sweaty work, but now I have a room with windows that serve a purpose. (As opposed to a basement apartment where half of the window was underground) My room is fairly large, and I have a pretty sweet desk that my landlord didn't feel like moving. Now we just need the bathroom fixed and to finish moving the rest of the kitchen stuff, and my roommates and I will officially be moved into our new apartment. I'm pretty excited. It's definitely much nicer than our other apartment, which is just downstairs from where we are now. There are more windows, and the light isn't being blocked by other bulidings. The only downside is that when we go grocery shopping, we have to carry them up a flight of stairs. At least I'll be getting my exercise.
However, this weeekend was not a good moving weekend. I had a lot of work that I wanted to get done. However, after moving all my stuff up three flights of stairs (from the basement to the top floor all the way in the back), I didn't want to do anything else. So, I had to stuff everything I needed to do into one day. Needless to say, I didn't get much work done at all. This summer is going to be highly unproductive if I don't get my butt in gear.
One good point, tonight is another ice cream social for orientation, so free ice cream = happiness.

Big Project

So today was my first big project due date. Going into this weekend, I was feeling pretty good about my time. I figured I would be able to be completely finished by late Sunday night. Unfortuately, that was not the case. I was up until 2 sunday night, and then I woke up at 7 this morning to finish it. It amazes me sometimes how long it takes me to do things. I have been doing sketches and flats for about 2 years now and I still underestimate the time it takes to complete an assignment. At least I'll know next time that I need a lot longer than I thought. We also had a critique on our project, which was to come up with a sportswear(which are just regular everyday clothes) collection for a given store or designer. I was extremely self conscious about my project because it was put together very quickly and not as good as the rest of the class. It didn't go as badly as I thought it would, but it wasn't great either. The next project will have to be much better, which hopefully now that I have an idea of what I need to do and how to plan my time, will be.

I think part of my problem was that I was jealous of some of my roommates. They were at the shore this weekend, and it was such a beautiful weekend to be there. I really want a nice day at the beach. I think that will definitely help me through this summer.

On a good note though, my roommates and I got tickets to the Maroon 5 concert, which happens to be 2 days after my 21st birthday. Needless to say, I am incredibly excited. It will be a lot of fun, and I'll be ready for it after this summer is over.

Convenient Location

This weekend showed me how glad I am that Drexel has such a convenient location. I had to go to New York twice this weekend. Once was for my sportswear class. I needed to go fabric shopping, so a few of my friends from class and I drove up there to spend the day. First,we went to the Met to look at the Poiret exhibit. Then we headed to the fabric stores after that. After I got back to Philly, my roommates and I went to the movies, which is a mere ten minutes away, to see Harry Potter (which was pretty good for those of you who haven't seen it yet). It is just really easy to get around from where we are. All the highways have exits and entrances at or near 30th street. The second time I had to go to NY was for the Dispatch concert I went to on Sunday (which was awesome, by the way. Madison Square Garden, completely full, everybody singing along to the songs, so cool). We drove to a stop for NJ transit, and took the train the rest of the way in. It took two hours and $20. That's pretty good to go to NY for the day. Also, any time I need to go fabric shopping in Philly, the subway is really close, the trolley stops at the corner of my street, and everything is easy to navigate (unlike some NY transit). I have a new found appreciation for University City.

Fourth of July

This week was definitely eventful. I basically only had four classes all week long. It was awesome. I had to go to New York for fabric shopping, so I spent a day there sightseeing as well. Then, my roommates and I went to the shore to spend 4th of July. However, it rained a little and was overcast all day, so we ended up mini-golfing instead. It was still a lot of fun. We ccame back that night to see the fireworks at the Art museum. It was pouring rain so they cancelled it, only to later set them off anyway. you can still see them from where I live so we went outside and wathced them. It was a little bittersweet, but enjoyable nonetheless. Having a break from classes has been pretty nice. Hopefully more fun adventures will occur throughout the summer.
My classes aren't so bad though. I'm taking about 17 credits, which is a normal amount, but I don't seem to have the motivation that I need to my work in these classes. Here is my schedule:
Mondays and Wednesdays: Fashion Presentation Drawing 9-12, Fashion Design III 12-3
Tuesdays: Intro to Finance 10-12, History of Costume 5-7
Thursdays: Intro to Finance 10-12, World War II Comedy 6:30-9:30
So my schedule isn't too hard, especially with Fridays off. I just don't want to do anything. I'll gt back into the swing of things hopefully by the end of this week, because after this week, I will have a lot of work to do in a short amount of time. It will be bunches of fun.

First Week of Summer

So this is the first week of classes for the summer term. This will be my second summer here at Drexel. Hopefully it will be as nice as my first one. I thought it would be terrible, but really it wasn't too bad.
My roomates and I went on adventures, since the classes in the summer tend to be easier, and most people don't have classes on Friday. We went to the shore and to the Aquarium, had a good time in the city for the 4th of July, and took some road tirps. The time goes by a lot faster than one might think. It was a little frustrating to see that my friends from home were hanging out at home and having a good time, but most of them ended up going to summer school for part of the summer anyway. Also, if I were home, it would probably be a lot more boring that some of my classes.
In the end, summer term at Drexel really wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be. Although it looks like I will have a lot of work in some of my classes, at least I will be done with my classes for the week by 12 on Thursday. I basically have a 3 1/2 day weekend. That will free up time for this summer's adventures, which may include a 4th of july trip to the shore, a trip to the Poconos, and a couple of trips to NY. This should be a pretty fun summer.

Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Vanessa and I will be your DWC member for this summer. I thought I would tell you a little bit about myself and why I came to Drexel. I'm 20 years old and now a senior here at Drexel. I'm majoring in Fashion Design and minoring in Business Administration. I've lived in Greensboro, North Carolina, which is a medium-sized city, about an hour and a half away from Raleigh, for most of my life. However, before I lived there, I lived in LA, so I had a bit of experience with city life. It was a little bit of adjustment to move up to a city like Philadelphia. I had only been here once before I came up for orientation. However, you get used to it so quickly, and I love it here now. Transportation is easy to use, and there is a ton to do. I no longer live on campus, but i'm not far from it, about a 10-15 min walk. Most people move off campus after their frehsman year because it's much cheaper. I have 3 roommates, 2 bio majors and 1 graphic design major, so if you guys have any questions about those majors, I can ask them and get back to you. My hobbies, when I'm not in front of a sewing machine, are reading, watching tv, and hanging otu with my friends.
I learned about Drexel from research that my mom did. My choice was mainly between Drexel and Philadelphia University, so I came to visit both. It seemed like Drexel had a much more comprehensive Fashion program and the location was so convenient, so I decided to go with Drexel. I'm definitely happy with my decision, and I think you guys will be too. I hope to learn more about each of you over this summer, and I will update this blog about once a week, so check back to see what summers here at Drexel are like.
